Commonwealth's Attorney

The Commonwealth's attorney is primarily responsible for matters involving enforcement of the criminal law within the county.  The county attorney handles civil duties in most Virginia counties, and, upon agreement with the commonwealth's attorney, may place in County Attorney violations of certain county ordinances. Front Sign at the Commonwealth Attorney's Office

Under Virginia law, the Commonwealth's Attorney is the chief law enforcement officer of their respective jurisdiction.  The primary mission of the Office of the Commonwealth's Attorney is to review and prosecute all felony cases, domestic violence cases, and misdemeanor cases and to provide legal training and advice to police officers, magistrates, and other local officials.

In accomplishing this mission, the Office reviews all felony cases, domestic violence cases and misdemeanor cases and prosecutes those cases in which there is sufficient evidence.  We provide legal advice to the Greensville Sheriff's Office, the Emporia Police Department, and the local Virginia State Police field office.  The office prepares and prosecutes the weekly Greensville Circuit Court Criminal Docket, presents all indictments to the Grand Jury, and handles all preliminary hearings in felony cases.  The Office also prosecutes misdemeanor cases in the General District Court and the Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court.  Additionally, the Office projects the rights of crime victims and witnesses through the Victim/Witness Assistance Program.
