Emporia-Greensville Department of Social Services

Greensville/Emporia Department of Social Services

The Greensville/Emporia Department of Social Services has been in operation since 1936.  The department was established as a result of the passage of the Social Security Act of 1935, which established both the Social Security benefits program as well as the public assistance program of Aid to Dependent Children (ADC).

The department became a district office in 1972 after Emporia became a city and was required by state to provide social services to their citizens.

The Greensville/Emporia Department of Social Services currently provides a wide array of services.  These services are generally divided into two categories.

  • Benefits Programs is one category.  These programs include TANF (Temporary Assistance to Needy Families), Food Stamps, Medicaid, State and Local Hospitalization, General Relief, Fuel Assistance and Emergency Services.

                                     **Changes in Food Stamp Program**

Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) is a new way for Food Stamp Recipients to receive their benefits.  Benefits will be received through a swipe card called the Cardinal Card.
